Attention is a key component of cognitive function. Attention is closely related to alertness and plays a role in goal-directed behaviour, as well as to emotions and motivation. Disorders of attention have an impact on the effectiveness of other cognitive functions. Attention takes several different forms, including focusing, sustaining and shifting. "Focusing" refers to the ability to concentrate on a single item, "sustaining is the process of maintaining attention for a period of time and "shifting" is the ability to move focus from one item to another.
